June 2009 Total money raised from TKCI 2009 was $124,053. As in priors years, most of the money raised went go to Cure our Kids. As per previous years, we donated money to other charitable causes as well. The Committee decided to donate to 3 causes this year: (1) $7,000 to the family that Justo brought to our attention. They are looking to raise some money for their daughter's room who has autism whilst also suffering from insomnia. This money will help them professionally soundproof her room which will make a material difference to both Fiona and her family. This donation will go through Giant Steps which is an organisation that looks after families with autistic children so tax receipts can also be issued. (2) $20,000 to the charity that Singer brought to our attention. One of his mates was did the Gobi Desert race to support some charities. One of the kids charities on that list was: Kids for Life - a charity in Australia established in 2003. Kids for Life is devoted to raising awareness of sick and under privileged children and helping Australian networks extend the best care to enrich and brighten the lives of these children and their families. Their mission is to raise funds for research and awareness, to find cures for childhood illness and disease and assist in the welfare of children less fortunate than others. (3) $97,053 to Cure our Kids
June 2008 Total money raised for charity from TKCI 2008 was $121,103. $95,788 was once again donated to the Cure Our Kids organsation. This is an organisation we have been supporting in prior years and have continued to do so. One of the main visions of Cure Our Kids is to make a significant contribution to the Oncology Unit of The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, which is now being realised. $25,315 was donated to the CP Foundation. This is a charity that was set up by the Spastic Centre in 2005 to seek ways to conduct research into Cerebal Palsy and improve the lives of those families and chidlren affected by Celebal Palsy. Cerebral palsy is a lifelong neurological condition that affects movement and, for more than 85%, its cause is unknown. To date, there has been little research into the causes of CP.
August 2007 Total money raised for charity from TKCI 2007 was $106,657. $85,778 was donated to the Cure Our Kids organsation. This is an organisation we have been supporting in prior years and have continued to do so. On of the main visions of Cure Our Kids is to makr a significant contribution to the Oncology Unit of The Children’s Hospital at Westmead is being realised. $20,879 was donated to Dr. Stephen Robertson's work via the Children's Medical Research Institute at Westmead Hospital. Dr. Robertson’s particular area of genetic research is very precise. “One or two children in 50 are born with something that is structurally not quite right - a hole in the heart, hydrocephalus, deafness, spina bifida, for example. While the origin of some of these can be attributed to things like drugs or infections, the vast majority are a puzzle. These disorders certainly have genetic components, but they don’t run in families in a predictable fashion. The particular group I’m looking at are all purely genetic in origin. What I’m interested in is finding the particular gene – or genes in these cases – which have mutated or changed in some way. If we understand the basis of rare conditions like these, there’s a good chance we will be able to understand those sporadic birth defects, like holes in the heart etc. that individually occur more commonly.”
June 2006 Total money raised for charity from TKCI 2006 was $84,285. $71,288 was donated to the Cure Our Kids organsation. This is an organisation whose main objective is to fund scientific research to find a cure for childhood cancer. The growth potential of Cure Our Kids is strong and their goals are achievable. With the leadership of a competent management committee and carefully considered partnerships, their vision of making a significant contribution to the Oncology Unit of The Children’s Hospital at Westmead is being realised. $12,997 was donated to the Bessie Fitzpatrick-Orringe Foundation. Bessie, an 8 year old girl, was diagnosed with the extremely rare Neuroendocrine Carcinoma in May 2006. She continues to fight hard and defy the odds, but is in urgent and continual need of treatment. The aim of the Bessie Fitzpatrick-Orringe Foundation is to raise money to enable Bessie's family to get her the required ongoing treatment at the best places.
